Nick Bradey Interesting track that demands your active
attention. Shades of Hashshashin ; as would
be expected. Hopefully there will be more to
come . Listen in the dark to accentuate the
atmosphere generated by the music .

Smekermann This is an incredible song. The repeating motif that is introduced ~4 minutes in is absolutely breathtaking, it made me drop everything I was doing and reconnect with the music immediately. I feel like the artistic intent comes through beautifully. Once death comes for me, I can only hope it is as warm and embracing and simply transcendent as my experience listening to this song. Real life has a way of underwhelming expectations, though.

about

'Death Envelops All' is the debut track from Sydney ambient/drone artist Lachlan R. Dale.

Built upon washing ambience and ever-building waves of cascading drone, the track calls to mind a mixture of Rafael Anton Irisarri's soundscape work, the weight of Sunn O))), and the post-apocalyptic atmosphere of Earth and Year Of No Light.

'Death Envelops All' can be seen as an elaboration of the ritual aspects of Hashshashin's 2019 album Badakhshan, with its use of space and repetition to induce a trance-like state.

Lachlan explains the inspiration for the track:

"There have been days where I can think of nothing but death, the theme repeating again and again like a mantra. Each repetition builds a sense of dread until, finally, it permeates everything, and I am dragged under by the weight. Then, I am forced to confront the question: What about death? What matters then?

One day while playing guitar I found a simple repeating figure that seemed to represent this sensation. It pulled me down, deeper and deeper until I was submerged again under that feeling."

Lachlan is best known for his work in Middle Eastern drone outfit Hashshashin, psychedelic doom band Adrift For Days, and the progressive metal group Serious Beak - but he has also founded and manages two record labels: Art As Catharsis, which focuses on forward-thinking music from the Australian underground, and Worlds Within Worlds, which showcases classical instrumental music from the East.

2020 sees Lachlan focused on exploring new collaborations, with an album for Persian drone duo Black Aleph, and a film collaboration with Conor Ashleigh currently underway.
